Having a computer feature like creating user accounts is a very useful thing. Indeed, due to their presence, you can comfortably use a computer for several people, and even if you are its sole owner, they can come in handy.
The user account in windows provides you with approximately the same thing as your own room, if you do not live alone in the apartment. This is your personal space, which you can customize as you wish, choose a color scheme, the location and appearance of the icons, various appearance settings, and so on. You have a place to store personal information inaccessible to other computer users and access to data in the rest of the computer.
You must admit that it very much resembles your room in the house but, as in the real world, you cannot be completely sure of the inviolability of your private territory. There is a possibility that someone from the household will enter your room without you. Unless you are the most important in the family and everyone obeys you unconditionally, then you can invade others without demand, but not with you. The same situation with accounts, so you need to remember that if you are not the most important in the computer, your private territory can be violated without demand. In more detail, why it is advantageous to use multiple accounts on a computer, discussed in a separate article.
What is a user account?
User account. a list of information that defines personal computer settings, access rights to files and directories in the file system, user rights to change the computer (global Windows settings, installing and removing programs, etc.). To identify a user in the system, the name of his account (login) and password are used.
There are three types of user accounts in Windows: administrator, standard, guest. The administrator account provides full access to computer management, it is similar to the most important person in the family. A standard account is similar to a regular household, it can be hosted within its territory, but changing global settings affecting all computer users is not available. The guest account, as the name implies, is designed to provide temporary access to the computer of an outsider and has the least rights.
There is a concept of user group. For the convenience of administering a computer, accounts with the same rights are placed in one group and the rights are set for the entire group, and not for each user separately. In windows, by default there is a group of administrators and a group of standard users. The administrator can create new groups, set their rights and move users between groups. One user can enter several groups at once.
Create a user account in Windows
We will consider the process of creating a new computer user account for novice users using the example of Windows 7; in other versions of the operating system, all actions are similar. As already mentioned, the administrator has the rights to create new users and edit existing ones. There are several ways to manage user accounts on a computer. Consider two of them and probably start with the simplest and most understandable for beginners.
“User Account Management” item in the control panel
To create a new account, click the "Start" button, select "Control Panel" ⇒ "Add or Remove User Accounts". The appearance of the control panel depends on the viewing mode, the figures show the “Category” viewing mode.
A window with the main accounts will open. We want to create a new computer user, so we select "Create an account."
You will be transferred to a new window, where you are prompted to enter the name of the new user and select the type of account. Best of all, when there is only one administrator in the computer, this is useful from a security point of view and saves from a situation where different users constantly change global settings in their own way. Having decided on the computer’s username and type of account, click the “Create Account” button.
That’s it, a new account has been created and you can use it, but we recommend that you make a password for the new account. The password can be made by the computer administrator or the user himself. To independently create a password for your account, you must log in to it on the login screen. Next, run the “Control Panel” again and go to “User Accounts and Family Security” ⇒ “Change Windows Password”.
A window will open with a choice of possible actions with your account. Select "Create a password for your account" and enter the password you created.
You can also change the picture of your account. Other options marked with a shield icon will require you to enter an administrator password.
The administrator can also create a password for the new account. To do this, log into the system as an administrator, follow the familiar path “Control Panel” ⇒ “Add and delete user accounts” and select the desired user account. The window that opens shows a list of possible actions for managing a user account in Windows. Select the item "Create Password", enter the password and click the "Create Password" button.
A few words about the guest account in Windows. This account is disabled by default and only a computer administrator can enable it. It is not possible to set a password or change the type of account. You can change the picture and enable / disable the account.
Delete account in Windows
In addition to creating, a user with a computer administrator account can delete other user accounts on the computer. Select "Delete account" in the window from the previous figure. The system will offer to save the user’s personal files or delete them together with the account. In the case of choosing to save data, they will be saved on the desktop in a folder with the name of the account to be deleted.
Using the Local Users and Groups snap-in
This method provides advanced capabilities for managing users and groups on a computer by creating rules. To create a new user on the computer, open the “Control Panel” ⇒ “System and Security” ⇒ “Administration” and in the new window that opens, double-click on “Computer Management”, select “Local Users and Groups”.
Another way to open the snap-in is to click “Start” ⇒ “Accessories” ⇒ “Run” or the key combination WIN R. Enter lusrmgr.msc in the window that opens and click OK. Right-click on the “Users” item and select “New User. ".
Fill in the window that opens, the data of the new computer user, set the necessary checkmarks and press the "Create" button.
You can assign or change a user group by double-clicking on its name or right-clicking on the name and selecting “Properties”. Go to the “Group Memberships” tab.
Press the “Add” button, a new window will open and, depending on your preferences, do one of the methods. Enter the name of the group to be added to the form and click the check button "Check Names" then the "OK" button.
The second way to click the Advanced button. "And then the" Search "button. A list of all groups on this computer will be displayed, select the desired group and confirm the selection.
That’s all that we wanted to talk about user accounts in Windows today. There are still ways to manage them, but novice computer users will have enough of these.
Not all described methods work in Windows 7 Home. Works in Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, or Windows 7 Enterprise.
