Find out what to do if you receive an error message when you try to update wirelessly. If you cannot update using the wireless connection due to lack of free space, you can update the software using a computer or manually delete the contents from the device. Regardless of how the update is installed — using a computer or wirelessly — after the process is complete, the amount of free space on the device will not change.

Some OS updates cannot be installed wirelessly. Connecting through a VPN or proxy server may interfere with the device’s communication with the operating system update servers.

Automatic update

On a device with iOS 12 and later or iPadOS, you can set up automatic updates. To enable automatic updates, go to the Settings menu > “Basic” > Software Update, and then click Auto Update. Your device will automatically upgrade to the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. Some updates may need to be installed manually.

Updating a device using a computer

If you cannot update the device wirelessly, you can perform the manual update on a trusted computer. If the computer uses the modem mode on the updated device, before starting the update, connect the computer to another Wi-Fi or Ethernet network.

  1. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15, open Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or on a Windows computer, open iTunes.
  2. Connect the device to the computer.
  3. Find your device on the computer.
  4. Select “General” or “Settings,” and then click “Check for Updates.”
  5. Click the Download and Update button.
  6. Enter the password if necessary. If you do not remember your password, see the instructions in this article.

By updating iOS or iPadOS to the latest version, you will get access to the latest features, security updates, and also forget about old problems. Some features are not available on all devices and not in all regions. Battery and system performance are affected by many factors, including network conditions and usage patterns, so actual performance may vary.
