The Acer Iconia Tab W700 tablet arrived in our test lab. The tablet was first introduced in the summer of 2012, but still does not lose its relevance and is sold at very attractive prices. The tablet comes with full Windows 8, a large 11.6-inch screen and an Intel Core i5 processor. It turns out a full-fledged computer in a compact format. Read all the details in our review.
- WLAN 802.11 a / b / g / n
- Bluetooth 4.0
- Front: 2 MP
- Back: 5 MP
- 1x 3.5mm mini jack
- 1x micro HDMI
- 1x USB 3.0
Acer Iconia Tab W700 looks solid. This is ensured by both a large screen and a solid aluminum case. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass, which is scratch resistant. The assembly is really high quality. There are no backlashes and deflections of the body. Around the glass protecting the screen, a rubber gasket that prevents dust from entering. An interesting feature is the mesh covering the speakers. They are red here.
The tablet is quite thick. The thickness is 11.9 mm. The thickness is not too great, and this drawback can be forgiven given the fact that they managed to accommodate both the filling and the battery from a full laptop. The Acer Iconia Tab W700 weight is also quite large for the tablet. 950 g. You get tired if you hold it with one hand.
There are few connectors and control buttons in the tablet. On the left side are (from top to bottom): microphone holes, micro-HDMI connector, a full USB 3.0 port and a connector for charging. Above are a button to lock the screen orientation and fan holes with a cooling radiator. On the right side are a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a volume rocker and a power button with an LED for notifications. At the bottom there are two speakers and another microphone. Above the screen in the middle is a 2-megapixel front camera, an LED camera operation indicator, as well as a light sensor. Below the screen is the Windows button to return to the home screen. At the back, at the top, is a 5-megapixel camera also with an LED operation indicator.
There are two holes for the fan, but this is done for symmetry; in fact, there is only one fan. It is located under the right grill. The cooling system works almost constantly, even while reading, the fan turns on and off. A fan makes a lot of noise and loudly, since at least the sound does not annoy the ears. The noise is very annoying. Perhaps it is associated with our test sample.
The package for the Acer Iconia Tab W700 is very good.
Inside the box, besides the tablet itself, there is a docking station with a built-in USB hub, a wireless Bluetooth keyboard, a power supply unit, a microHDMI-VGA adapter, instructions, a warranty card, and Windows recovery discs.
The docking station is a stand for the tablet. She herself is made of plastic, quite large and thick in size. The design looks much cheaper than the design of the Acer Iconia Tab W700. For speakers, there are corresponding holes that “redirect” the sound forward. The design allows you to use it for landscape and portrait orientation. But the angle cannot be changed. And the standard angle in landscape orientation is small. the screen of the tablet somehow looks into the chest, not the face. A USB hub is integrated in the docking station. It has three USB 3.0 ports. Unfortunately, it only works when the dock is connected to the network. For this, charging from the tablet is used.
The keyboard is good, membrane type. It looks stylish, the key travel is pleasant and quite large for portable devices. The keyboard does not bend when pressed. It’s comfortable to work for her. The keys are white, so they get dirty quickly. You have to quite often wipe them. The inscriptions on the keys are black. The letters of the Russian language are not highlighted in a separate color. Function key labels using the “Fn” button in gray. The keyboard has 66 keys. Standard size keys. The distances between them are a little bit standard, but not by much. you won’t miss, typing blindly. The arrows have half height, and the up arrow is located almost close to the Shift key. You have to get used to it. The F1-F12 keys are available by pressing the Fn key. The only thing that upset was the position of the Delete key. it is in place of the context menu call key. This is unusual and uncomfortable. The keyboard connects to the tablet via Bluetooth. Powered by four AAA batteries. There are two indicators. battery power and Bluetooth connection. Both the keyboard and the dock have rubber pads and do not slide on the table.
We have a copy with this package. There are also tablets with a case in which the keyboard is built in.
Windows 8 was preinstalled on the tablet. The system offered to upgrade to Windows 8.1. After the update, the tablet began to respond poorly to touch the screen and generally “slow down”. Reinstalling the drivers, which can be downloaded from the official support site, corrects the situation.
The Windows 8.1 used is no different from the hard drive version for a laptop or desktop computer, everything is familiar. Although the system is still designed for mobile devices. Only by controlling gestures, it becomes convenient to call the menu with charms (swipe the screen from the right edge), close applications in the metro-style (swipe the screen from the top edge), call the task manager, etc.
Unusual screen lock function. The tablet goes to sleep, and it takes time to unlock (about 1.5s). This should be remembered, since if you press the power button twice, the tablet will not wake up. But in this sleep mode, the tablet practically does not consume energy and can lie for a long time.
In Metro mode, using the tablet is convenient. Thanks to the touch screen, the system can control various gestures. In windowed mode at a standard scale, everything is very small (Full-HD resolution on the screen 11.6") It works comfortably only at a scale of 150%. Then you can safely hit the buttons on the screen with your finger. But in this case, quite a bit of information is placed on the screen. In addition, not all applications support scaling, because of this the picture in them turns out blurry. In fact, windowed mode is not designed to control your fingers. If you set the scale to 125%, then the information is enough, and the size of the icons is acceptable. In this case, control with the mouse and keyboard is convenient.
Since we have before us a tablet and a device with full Windows 8, we will conduct testing using a combined technique.
Below are screenshots of CPU-Z.
Windows Performance Index
First of all, we evaluated the system performance using the built-in Windows performance index. Only in Windows 8.1 results are not displayed anywhere. They are contained in the system file.
The result is good. 4.9 points for a compact tablet. The result is determined by the smallest value. In our case, the weak link is the graphic core. All other components have an even higher result.
The next step was performance testing with the built-in benchmark of the popular WinRAR archiver, which loads all the processor cores.
3254 kb / s) is good for a mobile device. For comparison, the recently tested ASUS VivoTab Smart on Intel Atom Z2760 showed a result of only 730 kB / s.
We tested the performance of the Intel Core i5 3317U chip on the Acer Iconia Tab W700 using the Linpack from the MetroBench package. Results are shown in millions of floating point operations per second (MFLOPS).
Average performance: 920 Mflop / s is the best result among the tablets we tested, but the processor is also Intel Core i5, not intel Atom. And the rivals of ARM are noticeably behind.
The 3DMark Ice Storm test uses tests that simulate 3D games, as well as synthetic tests of the video subsystem and CPU.
In standard mode, the results are not even displayed. The maximum possible values are exceeded. In Unlimited mode, we were able to get results. The results are just great for a tablet. But compared with competitors from Microsoft Acer Iconia Tab W700 turned out slower than Surface Pro. Slower both the updated second version and the first.
Video: No Charging On Acer Iconia Tablet
We also measured the performance of the graphics subsystem using the cross-platform benchmark. Relative Benchmark.
High performance. This is the best result among the tablets we tested.
The result is impressive: 228 ms (less is better). Again a record.
We tested network performance with IxChariot. The tablet was located about 1 meter from the access point. The maximum available network mode (802.11n) was tested, at this time no other active transmissions were conducted.
And here the result was excellent: 55 Mbps. No wonder the aluminum tablet has a plastic insert on the rear panel for the wireless module.
Sid Meier’s Civilization V
This popular strategy is adapted for touch screen control. At startup, you can select the appropriate Touch-mode. It turns out to play comfortably. It is interesting to just try it. For example, to select a unit or press any control button, you do not need to move the mouse. you can immediately click on the right place with your finger. You can use gestures with a few fingers. for example, zoom. At maximum settings, the game, of course, slows down. it’s still the integrated graphic core of the HD4000, and the native screen resolution is Full-HD (1920×1080). But at medium settings you can play quite comfortably. Only large cards are not loaded immediately, but this problem exists on more powerful configurations. Unlike a laptop, it is comfortable to play while lying in bed or sitting in a car / subway.
At the moment, most games do not involve finger control. But there is a solution for them. There is a GestureWorks Gameplay application that adds a virtual joystick to the screen. You can create a set of virtual buttons yourself, you can use ready-made ones from the site.
Thanks to this, the control becomes “playable”. Better to see once than hear a hundred times. Everything becomes clear from the next video.
Shooters are not so convenient to play without tactile feedback. the gameplay is similar to mobile shooters (Modern Combat). But it’s really convenient to play games where accuracy is not so important: Skyrim, Portal 2, Assassin’s Creed and any race. We appreciated the work and functionality of the program using the example of Portal 2.
The game itself is not particularly demanding on the hardware; the system issues a sufficient amount of FPS even on "native" permission. In this game, in most cases, you need to think more than react quickly, so you can play with the on-screen joystick and control buttons. The speed of the game is less than with the keyboard, but it’s worth it. It turns out a game for the tablet with adjustment for your grip and finger length. You can play such “adult” games on the road. It’s comfortable. This may appeal to fans of quests. For PC, there are more good games of this genre.
It turns out on the tablet you can play normally "adults" PC games Then why buy a separate laptop or desktop computer for games? We rated the tablet’s performance in several popular games that you can play sitting at the table, placing the tablet in the docking station, connecting the keyboard and mouse.
We launched World of Warcraft Lich King. This game behaved a little strange. 24 fps at low settings and a resolution of 1366×768, 23 fps at maximum settings and "native" Resolution 1920×1080. The performance of the Acer Iconia Tab W700 should be enough for undemanding popular games such as WOW, CS and Dota. The screen has a high resolution, but relatively small size. But do not forget about the micro-HDMI connector. you can connect a large monitor and play if it is important to you.
In the Mafia II game at the minimum settings, the built-in benchmark showed 11.9 and 22.0 FPS in the resolution of 1360 × 768 and 640 × 480, respectively. I even managed to launch Grand Theft Auto IV, although the built-in benchmark did not load, I managed to start the game itself. In the game settings it was displayed that the system allocated only 100 MB of video memory, and the game requires at least 300 MB. Therefore, although the game was loaded and produced a sufficient number of FPS (there were no visible jerks and delays), the textures did not have time to load, and the car in the game rode along the “void”.
Demanding games to play on the Acer Iconia Tab W700 will not work. At the moment, the technologies are not developed enough to put a sufficiently powerful configuration in such a compact case and provide it with sufficient cooling.
Like most other tablets, the Acer Iconia Tab W700 is equipped with two cameras. Rear with a resolution of 5 MP matrix and front. 2 MP. The front camera is good, everything is clearly visible, but when moving, the picture does not blur, only in poor lighting the picture becomes grainy. For video conferencing, you definitely have enough.
Below is an example of a front camera shot and a video. You can see all the test photos in the photo gallery. The video can be downloaded uncompressed (20 MB).
The rear camera is suitable for capturing moments when there is nothing else at hand. Photos are grainy and blurry, even in good light. The camera is located in the corner, so it’s hard to navigate when photographing close objects. There is no flash.
I was pleased with the additional microphone, which really suppresses noise. In test videos, the street was shot in the afternoon. It’s quite noisy there, but no background noise is heard in the commercials.
Below is an example of a front camera shot and a video. You can see all the test photos in the photo gallery. The video can be downloaded uncompressed (52 MB).
Since April 2013, we have been using a new testing methodology for testing multimedia devices. It is divided into several parts.
- Popular formats. Common video formats and codecs. Their support is recommended to be evaluated first
- DVD and Blu-ray Disc Images. Check playback of full DVD / Blu-ray images, including menus. Recommended if you are storing your multimedia library as images.
- Rare formats. less common formats, but still relevant
- Ultra HD 2K and 4K. formats with an eye to the future. In 2013, ultra-high-resolution video will gain popularity
Testing was performed using Media Player Classic after installing the K-Lite Codec Pack Mega codec pack.
Check DVD playback from an ISO image
Checking DVD playback from a folder on a disc. Checking Dolby Digital and DTS tracks. Checking menus and chapter navigation. Subtitle check.
The tablet handled all the video formats from our test video library with the exception of Ultra HD 4K. Acer Iconia Tab W700 can be connected via micro-HDMI to a large TV in the living room and get a full Smart TV with support for a large number of video formats. In addition, the kit comes with a microHDMI-VGA adapter, thanks to which you can connect a projector to a tablet at a conference.
Acer Iconia Tab W700 showed good battery life. It has a 4850 mAh battery, but, unlike Android tablets, the battery here has a higher output voltage, and therefore in mAh the capacity cannot be compared, it needs to be compared in Wh. Such information is not provided on the official website. But for us, the main final time is the main thing. We got 7.5 hours of watching the movie at maximum brightness. In reading mode, the tablet will last at all 11 hours. In our tests in game mode, it was discharged in less than three hours. But it was the Unigine Heaven test, which completely loads the system and discharges it as quickly as possible. On the day of normal use, the tablet was always enough.
Charging the Acer Iconia Tab W700 from a full-fledged laptop, at 65 watts, so the tablet charges quickly.
Every year, computers are becoming more mobile. First, desktop computers with a system unit the size of a large box were replaced by laptops, then laptops became thinner and lighter. ultrabooks appeared. The next step was the tablet on a full Windows 8, which in its capabilities are not inferior to the “big brothers”. A striking example of such a concept is the Acer Iconia Tab W700, which is equipped with a full-fledged Intel Core processor. Due to this, unlike tablets on Intel Atom, it has the performance of a desktop computer. At the same time, the entire filling fit in a relatively compact case weighing less than a kilogram.
With such dimensions and performance, I had to make some compromises: the tablet is equipped with an active cooling system and, unlike ultrabooks, it has only one USB 3.0 port. The main thing is that Acer did not chase the minimum weight and installed an impressive battery in the case, which is enough to fully use the tablet for a whole day, and sometimes two.
Loved the tablet screen. IPS matrix with excellent viewing angles, Full-HD resolution at 11.6 inches. He’s just great. The quality of the picture, its clarity, color and brightness at height. It gives pleasure to watch movies, pictures, read on such a screen. Thanks to the high resolution, your eyes do not get tired.
Tablet performance is more than enough for all mobile applications, it is not enough only for modern high-performance games. Ultrabooks equipped with exactly the same "iron" and have the same performance, although they are less compact.
At the moment, this is the best tablet that I have ever had in my hands. Of course, I want an even thinner body and longer battery life. I hope this will be in the updated version of the tablet with the Haswell processor.
Acer Iconia W7 is available on the market in several trim levels. Two models are available. W700 and W701. The first comes without a 3G module, the second one has it built-in. For each model in the Russian market, there are three trim levels:
- With Core i3 processor, 64Gb memory
- With Core i3 processor, 64Gb memory docking station keyboard
- With Core i5 processor, 128Gb memory docking station keyboard
The main advantage of the Acer Iconia W7 compared to competitors such as Microsoft Surface Pro, Samsung Ativ smart PC pro was the price. Acer cost around 30-35 thousand rubles, while competitors. for 40-45 thousand rubles. Now Acer W7 is leaving the market, but the tablet can be purchased at sales. We will wait for the updated version on Haswell in our test lab and hope that it will have the same “tasty” performance / price ratio.
