At the end of the summer of 2016, Meizu introduced its new line of smartphones, represented by U10 and U20. These are inexpensive devices with the usual hardware for their price category. Their main feature is an attractive design, with a glossy case made of metal and glass. In this review, we will talk about Meizu U10, which has a smaller display (and therefore dimensions), and at the same time is cheaper.
For a configuration with 2/16 GB of memory, they ask from 148 USD, and from 167 USD for the option with 3/32 GB. The indicated prices are approximate and current at the time of the creation of this review. It remains to be seen what a Meizu smartphone is worth less than $ 200.
Features Meizu U10
Specifications are almost completely identical to Meizu M3s.
Appearance, connectors, buttons and sensors
Meizu U10 received a completely rethought design. Yes, before the smartphones of this manufacturer also looked good, but now this is a completely different level. The front and back panels are fully covered by 2.5D rounded glass.
It is scratch resistant and is coated with an oleophobic layer, thanks to which the fingers glide easily on its surface.
The metal frames got a rectangular shape, and embossed beveled edges appeared on them, emphasizing the nature of the material.
Body colors are available: black, white, golden, and pink. Regardless of the color, the panel will be mirrored and glossy. In black, the device looks simply gorgeous. True, exactly until you touch it. Even after a short use, it’s scary to look at the case because of the many prints and greasy spots.
The oleophobic layer simply does not cope with them. I am glad that on the panel of a different color (white, for example), such ugliness is almost invisible.
The arrangement of elements is quite familiar, not counting the 3.5 mm connector. The tray for installing SIM cards and a MicroSD drive is located on the left side, on the right are the power and volume buttons. The top rib is empty, but on the bottom there is a MicroUSB connector with OTG support, a standard audio jack, holes for the main speaker and a microphone.
There are no familiar touch buttons for navigation either on the panel or on the screen. Instead, under the screen is a universal mTouch 2.1 button, touch and mechanical at the same time. Used for navigation in the OS interface, has a built-in fingerprint scanner. It stores up to 5 prints, the recognition angle reaches 360 degrees. The sensor is not as fast as the flagships, but the speed and accuracy are more than satisfactory. Product dimensions: 141.9 x 69.6 x 7.9 mm; its mass is 139 g.
The smartphone is equipped with an 8-core entry-level processor MediaTek 6750, with the architecture of ARM big.LITTLE. Cortex-A53 cores are divided into 2 clusters: 4 of them operate at a frequency of 1.5 GHz, and the remaining 4 are limited to 1 GHz. The role of the graphics accelerator is performed by the Mali-T860 chip. The results of the synthetic test Antutu: from 31 to 40 thousand points. In this example, the indicators depend on the version of the firmware, and on the amount of RAM.
In practice, the smartphone confidently copes with trivial tasks. Of course, you can load the device and make you think. But for a device of a similar price category, this is quite normal. Any resource-intensive 3D games are launched, although not always at the maximum level of graphics. With intense loads, problems with excessive heating of the case are not observed.
The smartphone comes in two configurations: 2 or 3 GB of RAM, and 16 or 32 GB of ROM. As for RAM, the version with 3 GB of RAM will demonstrate slightly better gaming performance. And for multitasking, a little more free memory will remain. That is, you can safely use the 2 GB version, the level of its performance for the eyes is enough for not very demanding users.

With the built-in drive, things are as follows. If you need a lot of free space, and you plan to use two SIMs, you will have to take a configuration with 32 GB. If you want to save a little, and there is an opportunity to do without an additional SIM card, obviously, the option with 16 GB is also suitable. In this case, the space can easily be expanded to 128 GB using an external MicroSD drive.
At the beginning of the review, mention was made of the striking similarities between the U10 and M3s fillings. So, the battery is an exception: from 3020 mAh the capacity dropped to 2760 mAh. The only logical explanation for such a downgrade can be considered an attempt by the manufacturer to affect the dimensions. As a result, the thickness of the U10 case is 7.9 mm compared to 8.3 mm for M3s.
With an average intensity of use, the battery lasts 1 day. In order to achieve work during the day under the same operating mode, you will have to learn how to save. For example, do not start games, reduce brightness, disable unused network modules, use the advanced power saving mode.
The smartphone uses a 13-megapixel photo module, consisting of 5 lenses. It is complemented by a two-tone flash, and fast phase PDAF autofocus. The aperture value is F / 2.2. The camera interface is simple and concise, but contains a lot of features. There are separate modes for shooting portraits, close-ups, panoramas, there is a built-in QR scanner, and much more I describe in the video below. It is worth noting the presence of manual settings for self-selection of exposure values, ISO, and more.
Daytime shots will please with sufficiently high detail, good color reproduction, good sharpness of the frame. Here are some shots:
Smartphone can create "GIFs" (GIFs), an example of which you see below.
Selfie camera shot:
The maximum video recording resolution is FullHD. In the afternoon, videos are written at 30 fps, in low light conditions the rate drops to 20 fps. Slow motion supported. The front camera is a 5-megapixel module, with aperture F / 2.0. A bunch of all kinds of filters were stuffed into the camera programmatically. And all for the sake of obtaining the effect of smooth skin. Supported video recording with a resolution of 1080p.
The smartphone has an IPS screen with a diagonal of 5 inches. The resolution of the picture is 1280 x 720 pixels, the pixel density is 296 PPI. The image is smooth and beautiful, the colors are nice, you can independently adjust the color temperature. The maximum screen brightness is not prohibitive (397 cd / m²), but quite sufficient. GFF full lamination technology has been applied: the image is contrasting, and the sensor layer clearly fulfills all touches.
The display is covered with a protective 2.5D glass with good oleophobic abilities.
Two Nano-SIM cards can be inserted into the combined slot. And both can work in 2G, 3G and 4G networks. The device is equipped with Bluetooth 4.0 BLE with low power consumption, as well as a wireless Wi-Fi module that can operate in the 2.4 or 5 GHz bands. Satellite navigation systems can provide GPS-based systems with support for A-GPS, and GLONASS. Navigation works as expected, however, like all other network communications.
The main speaker in inexpensive smartphones from Meizu is often blamed for the mediocre sound quality. And this despite the fact that there are not so many people listening to music through the speakers. Here is the most common budget speaker. The volume is enough to hear an alarm, notification or call. And to listen to music you need to use good headphones. Then there will be sound quality appropriate.
The Flyme shell, in addition to the standard Android functionality, has its own interface and advanced settings. It differs in the absence of a menu button (all icons are located on desktops). In most cases, Meizu software works quite stably. In addition, Flyme is constantly being developed and updated as new versions of the software become available.
For the first time in the mid-budget segment, Meizu uses this combination of design, body materials and assembly.
Pros and cons
- It looks expensive, elegant and stylish;
- the presence of a fingerprint scanner;
- high-quality display and a sufficient level of performance;
- nice price, taking into account the design;
- good display with a good oleophobic coating;
- good main camera and many features and settings.
- a combined slot, you have to refuse an additional SIM card or install a flash drive;
- a non-separable structure and glass on the back do not in the best way affect maintainability, and the cost of work, respectively.
Who will use a smartphone?
Meizu U10 is a good choice for people who, with a budget of no higher than 170 USD, expect to get the most beautiful 5-inch smartphone. In addition to design, the list of criteria can include stable operation of the device, fresh and functional software, decent daytime shots, sufficient performance and a good display.
The release of Meizu U10 (and U20) is a peculiar experiment of the company: to take a ready-made successful filling, and place it in a premium case. Those who follow the news are outraged, they say, “ay-ay-ay, Maize, it’s not good to do this.” But what is wrong with such a decision? Previously, beautiful, high-quality design was the prerogative of only image and flagship models. But not everyone was ready to give their hard-earned money for an expensive and shiny high-tech toy. Manufacturers understood this, so now even state employees cheaper than $ 100 can look very decent. And such tactics work.
