Smartphone manufacturers, as well as the best commentators in this world, are constantly in the race for the title of “first-born” of “the very first” or simply “himself”. Sometimes this championship is only surprising (hello Galaxy Round!), And sometimes it turns out a really suitable product. On June 18, Huawei entered their name on the first line of the most-most championship standings, introducing Ascend P6, the thinnest smartphone in the world.
No matter how hard I try, talking about the P6 design, avoiding all the annoying cliches about copying and two designers, will fail. Three years have already passed since the day when the design departments of the whole East clapped their hands on the forehead in unison because of a simple misunderstanding of how Steve and the company managed to make such a versatile and beautiful case for the phone at the same time, and we still see heirs and imitators. But really, if you are releasing a “ДЫзайнерский” smartphone, why waste time on the design itself? After all, it is much easier to throw all your strength into achieving that cherished goal. to be one of the most. Thin, fast, large. it does not matter, choose for yourself. So Huawei decided to supplement its Platinum (this is what the letter “P” in the name means) a line of smartphones with Cupertin’s appearance. This whole situation reminds me of the time when Motorola released its legendary RAZR and a couple of years after that, all inertia released phones with a keyboard made of a single metal plate. Well, all right, let’s throw the cliche aside and look at the P6 in detail.
I’ll start right away with the main thing. Yes, it is the thinnest smartphone in the world. Of course, Google can refute my words by displaying BBK Vivo X3 in the search results, whose thickness is only 5.75 mm in the blue version of the case, but Huawei has one trump card in its sleeve: its thickness is 6.18 mm over the entire area of the case. and the competitor’s camera module sticks out to “terrifying” 7.25 mm! So formally the crown remains at P6.
What gives the user this incredible thinness? I can’t say that I received any special benefits in terms of ease of use, it’s all about the sensations. Ascend P6 is noticeably different from ordinary smartphones, and after it, not so thick iPhone 4 and Optimus G feel puffy. It would seem that a couple of millimeters of difference, usually we don’t even notice them, but the hands get used and then reject everything that is a little thicker. The weight of 120 grams is also quite small for a device of this size.
The main body is made of aluminum, the bottom rounded plastic plate. P6 is available in three body colors. black, white and pale pink. Since the case is not disassembled, all card slots are placed on the right side of the case. At first, it might seem that the P6 supports two SIM cards, but Huawei did the right thing and made the upper slot for memory cards. The only inconvenience is that they do not differ from each other in size, and for 3 weeks each time I changed the memory card, I first removed the SIM card. Above them there is a volume rocker and a button on / lock the smartphone. Everything seems to be in place, but often instead of increasing the volume, I blocked the smartphone.
On top are micro USB connectors and a microphone for noise reduction. The very specific location of the connector is most likely due to the reluctance to spoil the lower rounded part and the peculiarity of the internal layout. By the way, the very bottom line is almost clean: it has only a miniature microphone hole.
The oddities do not end there. Did you find a headset jack? It is at the bottom left, covered with a clip for SIM cards. This is not a mistake: Huawei made the strangest plug for the connector of all time, which is better to put in a box immediately after purchase. A couple of times I forgot to leave her at home and was immediately perplexed as though not to lose her along the way. The very location of the connector also pleases. If you use headphones with an L-shaped plug, you will not experience any special problems, but the owners of ordinary plugs will be forced to endure inconvenience and worry about not breaking the wire itself.
There were no surprises behind. There is only a camera and a flash in the upper left corner, a small Huawei logo in the center and a speaker grid at the bottom. A terrible silver sticker is a tester’s fate, it won’t hit the shelves.
Almost the entire front panel is occupied by a 4.7-inch IPS screen with trendy narrow side frames. The resolution is 1280 by 720, which is quite enough not to see individual pixels. The screen is made without an air gap, which also pleases. Viewing angles are maximum, the image does not fade even with a deviation of almost 180 degrees. The maximum brightness of the backlight is almost 490 cd / m², the minimum is about 20. The screen supports up to 10 simultaneous taps. In general, I really liked the display: it is bright, saturated, and, in addition, the settings have the ability to manually adjust the color temperature. It is worth noting a really working oleophobic coating. fingerprints are almost invisible. There is the possibility of working in gloves, which, apparently, is already becoming the norm, which cannot but rejoice.
Above the screen, light and proximity sensors, an eerie mesh of conversational dynamics and a front camera are visible. The LED indicator is hidden on the left. At the bottom there are no functional elements. only the inscription “Huawei”. All keys on the screen, google approves.

Stuffing, performance, autonomy
Inside the Ascend P6, the company’s own development is used: the second-generation processor chip. HiSilicon K3V2E. It includes four Cortex-A9 cores made according to a rather outdated 40 nm process technology and operating at a frequency of up to 1.5 GHz, an exotic Vivante GC4000 as a video accelerator and 2 GB of RAM. All this bunch clearly does not reach the title of flagship iron. neither in benchmarks, nor in real life. The interface works pretty smoothly, but in resource-intensive applications and games P6 shows not the best results. In addition, under any load, the smartphone heats up significantly, and working with it is not very comfortable – here it is, payment for small thickness.
The smartphone has 8 GB of user memory, about five are available. Micro SD memory cards are supported up to 32 GB, although, based on my practice, I can say that where 32 are supported, 64 will also fit in. Wi-Fi 802.1 b / g / n, Bluetooth v3.0 and GPS are installed / GLONASS. Wi-Fi sensitivity is good, Ascend P6 confidently keeps reception even with a weak signal.
The main concern in such products is always the battery. I did not fully believe my eyes that a 2000 mAh battery was installed here, but that turned out to be true. As a result, the thinnest smartphone works for about 12 hours in normal use (half an hour of calls, EDGE on, 1.5 hours of music, a series of pictures and social networks) and about 3.5 hours in constant load mode. The figures are not outstanding, but remember the cherished 6.18 mm.

Huawei did not stop at a record thickness and decided to use another trump card in the P6. the resolution of the front camera is as much as five megapixels! But instead of admiration, only questions arise. What for? For whom? Unclear. It’s impossible to say that these millions of points went to the front camera. I didn’t notice the difference with the usual “kiso-cameras”. But the main camera surprised. At first, everything seems ordinary. 8 megapixels, flash, HDR mode, Full HD video recording. But as soon as it gets dark, Ascend P6 comes out of the gloom and does something unprecedented. It’s all about optics with aperture F2.0 and the ability to work with ISO values up to 5000! At first, I didn’t even know about this power until I turned on the camera in my favorite, dark office. Shumodav works, and well. All these words apply to video shooting.
The camera application interface has been changed from the standard. Shooting modes are available: with effects, HDR, panoramic, smart and decoration. The latter is essentially just a filter. No frills were found in the settings, everything is quite mundane.
I liked the volume and quality of the Ascend P6 spoken speaker. It is not so loud as to frantically reduce the volume in the room, and you cannot even call it quiet. The external speaker is quite loud and at the same time sounds clean, even at maximum volume it does not choke, but continues to clearly (as far as possible for monoacoustics) transmit the picture. The Huawei P6 uses the Dolby Digital Plus software enhancer, which, in fact, is a built-in equalizer. The selection of presets is activated when the headphones are connected, when playing through the speaker, only the “default” setting is available. A total of 16 options are available for a specific genre, there is an option for podcasts. Having tried to listen to different music with suitable settings, I was once again convinced that this was clearly not for me. Subjectively, all these software manipulations only spoil the sound, but if you really want to move the sliders, then it’s better to do it manually, but this is not possible in P6. The sound in the headphones without using Dolby seemed a little flat, I feel a lack of bass.
The smartphone has its own player. It looks pretty nice, supports folder playback and playlist creation. Also installed FM-radio, operating in the range of 87.5-108 MHz. A headset connection is required for its operation. the built-in antenna simply would not fit in such a case.
Software, Emotion UI
Like all decent eastern companies, Huawei has its own vision of Android. It is embodied in the form of Emotion UI version 1.6, which is most suitable for the appearance of the P6 shell for the OS. At first glance, it is clear what principles the Software Department of the company was guided by. AppDrawer (a list of all applications and widgets) is missing; all programs are stored only on desktops. A maximum of twelve applications or folders are placed on one screen, four shortcuts can be fixed at the bottom.
Emotion UI “chip” can be considered themes. Initially, there are five of them, you can download additional ones directly from the theme settings menu. All of them change the wallpaper, screen saver, lock screen, font and icon set. About the latter it is worth telling separately. All standard icons were redrawn for something resembling iOS prior to version 7. All of them are a square with rounded corners, and even the icons of user applications change. They are placed on a white substrate with the same curves and are slightly reduced in size. Thus, the integrity of the appearance is achieved, and in the end everything looks pretty good. It is also worth noting that any of the topics can be mixed. That is, you can install icons and wallpapers from one theme, the lock screen from another, and fonts from the third generally.
The notification shutter has been redone and looks similar to the corresponding one in CyanogenMod. The upper part is given under the shortcuts to the quick settings, and the bottom is already stored notifications. From here, you can immediately get to the settings.
Settings are divided into two tabs. In the “General” collected everything that is necessary for an undemanding user, and the tab “Everything” is a normal Android settings menu. Here, in principle, everything is standard, only the above-mentioned option for working with a gloved display, a tab with Dolby settings and activation of recognition of three movements are added to reduce the volume of an incoming call and answer / make a call.
All standard applications, including keyboards, are redrawn. Outwardly, the beautiful Anrdoid 4.2.2 has almost nothing left. The good news is that everything is done quite qualitatively and in one visual style, there is no difference in appearance, as in some other shells. Immediately installed programs for data backup, setting permissions for applications, power manager, flashlight, file manager and voice recorder (without the ability to record conversations). The system works quite smoothly. there are very few delays, slowdowns, and other sadnesses.
Huawei Ascend P6 evokes dual feelings. On the one hand, the P6 is quite comfortable in the hand, it is record-thin, it has a cool display, an interesting camera and a good shell. But in contrast, there is a limping iron, an uncomfortable arrangement of connectors and a frankly secondary appearance. Perhaps I am radical and there really is a segment of people who want a copy of you-know-what on Android, but I am not one of them. Another stumbling block is the price. The average cost of the Ascend P6 is 400, which puts it in competition with much more productive solutions. And here it is already up to you to decide which is more important. the appearance or characteristics. it remains only to the buyer.
