Recently, Huawei released a new fitness tracker called Huawei Band 4. Do not confuse it with Honor Band 4, as these are two completely different devices. After a week of use, I decided to share my impressions of the bracelet and at the same time compare it with Honor Band 5, released several months ago, although it would be more correct to make a comparison with its predecessor. Honor Band 4.
Key Features of Huawei Band 4
- Screen: 0.96 inches, TFT;
- Screen resolution: 160 80 pixels;
- Processor: Apollo 3;
- Memory: ROM: 384 KB, ROM: 1 MB, Flash: 32 MB;
- Sensors: 3-axis acceleration sensor, infrared sensor, optical heart rate sensor;
- Battery: 91 mAh;
- Battery life: 6. 9 days;
- Compatibility: Android 4.4 and above; iOS 9.0 and above; Water resistance: 5 ATM (up to 50 meters);
- Dimensions: 56 mm (length) × 18.5 mm (width) × 12.5 mm (thickness);
- Weight: 24 grams.
The delivery set is Spartan. Inside the small box made of loose cardboard, the bracelet itself is in a plastic stand, a brief user manual and a warranty card in several languages, including Russian and Ukrainian. Everything, there is nothing more in the box! No cables, no docking stations for charging. They are simply not needed here. At one end of the case there is a USB connector that can be plugged into any power adapter or laptop connector.
Design and screen
The case is made of plastic, the strap is made of very soft and pleasant to the touch silicone. Clasp straps are also plastic.
Huawei Band 4 is available in three color options: “graphite black”, “pearl white” and “amber sunrise”, or, more simply, black, orange and pink. The lower case is the same color as the strap.
When comparing Band 4 with all previous fitness bracelets manufactured under the Huawei and Honor brands, the most significant external difference was the way the strap was attached to the capsule. Now you do not need to unscrew the screws or remove the plastic bracket, like the Honor Band 4 or 5.
It is enough to press the button on the inside of the strap and it is easily detachable. One minus, it is unlikely in the near future it will be possible to find additional straps or bracelets for this bracelet.
On the display, Huawei decided to save. Probably, I really wanted to make the bracelet cheaper than the popular Xiaomi Mi Band 4. Previous models are equipped with an AMOLED matrix, but here a 0.95-inch TFT panel. The resolution decreased: 160 80 pixels (Honor 240 120), but this did not affect the details. The picture quality is at a very decent level, enough brightness, contrasting colors.
Three options for the main screen are available in the device’s memory. There are approximately 60 different options in the mobile application.
Work with the application and management
For the full use of all functions and to configure the tracker on a smartphone, you must install the Huawei Health mobile application (“Health”). You can download it both in the Play Market and in the App Store. But before pairing, the bracelet must be turned on. For this, the capsule must be connected to a power source.
After downloading and installing the application, you need to register an account, and then, following the prompts, pair with the smartphone. After connecting, the bracelet will automatically pick up the smartphone’s language, time and date.
Video: Huawei Band 4 Waterproof Or Not
We will not dwell on the Huawei Health app. You can read more about it in the instructions for Honor Band 4 and Band 5.
The tracker control element is a touch screen with gesture support, as well as the “Home” touch area located under the screen.
By default, the Huawei Band 4 interface consists of the following items:
- The main screen (using the tap on the main screen, the screen with the battery and connection status, as well as the current weather forecast) is called up;
- Activity (steps, calories, distance, activity time);
- Sleep (duration of sleep for the current day);
- (timer, stopwatch, dials, phone search, brightness, battery status, reset, restart and turn off the tracker);
In the application, you can change the display order of screens or delete unused ones.
To monitor the activity and condition of the body, the bracelet was equipped with an optical pulse sensor and a three-axis accelerometer. Honor Band 5 is equipped with a six-axis accelerometer, but, as it turned out, this does not particularly affect accuracy. During testing, both bracelets showed almost the same data.
To start heart rate measurement, just tap on the heart icon on the tracker screen. You can also set up automatic round-the-clock measurement and notifications of high or low heart rate, but this will significantly affect the battery life.
The bracelet can automatically track sleep. With the help of TruSleep technology, he not only recognizes the time of falling asleep and waking up, but also divides the sleep into phases, provides more than 200 personalized recommendations for its improvement.
Steps, Calories, Distance
Huawei Band 4 steps up a little more than the Honor Band 5 counts, but the difference is not significant. As for calories and distance, here everything is almost one to one. The results can be seen in the screenshots below (on the left is Huawei Band 4, on the right is Honor Band 5).
The tracker can track 9 sports modes:
- Running on the street;
- Running on a treadmill;
- Walking on the street;
- Walking on a treadmill;
- A ride on the bicycle;
- Classes on a stationary bike;
- Free training.
There is no GPS module of its own, therefore, you can use the smartphone’s GPS module to obtain data on the distance, pace and route of movement during training. Yes, although the case is waterproof up to 50 meters (5ATM) and you can safely swim with a bracelet, for some reason, there is no monitoring mode for swimming.
You can configure notifications for each application on your smartphone. When a notification is received, the tracker vibrates several times, and the message text is displayed on the screen. The last 10 messages are stored in memory.
When making a call, the phone number or contact name is displayed on the screen. It is possible to reject the call.
In addition to all of the above functions, there is also a timer, stopwatch, phone search function, control of its camera, alarm clock (smart and normal), a warm-up reminder.
The battery life declared by the manufacturer is 6 days with constant heart rate monitoring and sleep monitoring. Without a pulse, charging is enough for 9 days. Real autonomy is true. With active use, my bracelet sat exactly 6 days later.
The bracelet came to the Russian market at a recommended price of 2790 rubles, to the Ukrainian market. 999 hryvnias. At Aliexpress it can be purchased cheaper: from 26 (here or here).
To buy or not?
Overall, the Huawei Band 4 is a very simple, stylish, reliable and accurate entry-level fitness bracelet. But, it will be difficult for him to compete with Xiaomi Mi Band 4 and Honor Band 5.
The TFT screen is much inferior to the AMOLED matrix, there is no music control function, there is no oxygen sensor in the blood, like the Honor Band 5, there is no Bluetooth 5.0, like the Mi Band 4. But, at the same time, the Huawei Band 4 is not much cheaper than these two models.
