Hello, dear readers and visitors of the site “Notes of an electrician”.
Today’s article does not entirely relate to the topic of electrics, but I can’t not share it.
About all the advantages of the Smart TV function (Smart TV) I will tell you in my review in the near future. Do not miss the release of new articles on the site. subscribe to my newsletter.
In this regard, I open a new section on the site called “Internet, television”, where the first article will be instructions on how to connect the TV to the Internet. Naturally, this article will focus on connecting the Samsung TV to the Internet. There is not much difference between the models, and after reading this manual, you can connect the TV of any brand to the Internet.
There are 2 ways in total:
- wireless using wifi technology
- wired with cable
We will analyze each method in more detail.
How to connect the Internet to a Samsung TV using WiFi
I will connect my purchased TV to the Internet using WiFi wireless connection, as it already has a built-in WiFi module.
If your TV does not have a built-in WiFi module (see the manual), then for this you need to purchase an external WiFi adapter that supports the IEEE 802.11a / b / g / n communication protocol, which is connected to a free USB port on the TV.
Attention. Adapters of not all manufacturers are suitable for Samsung LED TVs, but only from Samsung, for example:
We figured it out. We go further.
To connect the TV to the Internet via WiFi, we need to purchase a router or, in other words, a router with WiFi support. Before buying a router, be sure to consult with the technical support of your provider.
For example, if your Internet connection is dynamic (dynamic IP address), then the router must be enabled for DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) so that the TV is automatically assigned an IP address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS and each time enter them manually.
I recommend to purchase routers of Asus or D-Link manufacturers. Personally, I purchased for myself the D-Link DIR-320 / NRU. You can look at its characteristics on the manufacturer’s website. Everything is written in detail there.
Then we turn to the most difficult thing. this is setting up the router. Until this day, I did not come across this personally, so I carefully started to study this process according to the instructions that came with the router. Everything was written there in Russian and in an “understandable” language.
They tuned it in turn for about two days. After setting up on a piece of paper I was given:
- name (name) of the WiFi network: tss_kt
- password (key) to WiFi access:
We disconnect the cable from the dedicated Internet line from the computer and connect it to the Internet connector of our router.
Also do not forget to apply power to the router.
After this moment, you can begin to set up WiFi wireless connection in the TV. But first, we’ll set up an Internet connection on the computer.
The kit includes a RJ45 patch cord cable, although only about 50 (cm) in length.
We connect one end of the RJ45 patch cord cable to any LAN port of the router (I connected to LAN 1), and the other end to the computer’s network card.
I forgot to say that when I received the router after it was set up in the provider’s office, they printed instructions on how to configure the Internet connection on the computer.
Having done the above operations for his version of Windows, the Internet has earned on the computer. And now, with a clear conscience, let’s get back to setting up and connecting to the Internet on the TV using WiFi.
We press the “MENU” button on the remote control from the Samsung TV and use the buttons to select the “Network” tab in the list.
Then go to the “Network Settings” tab. Here is a window like this.
Press "ENTER" and the window opens:
I want to note that the Samsung TV is very convenient for navigation and tips.
Press "Start" and the TV will give us all the found available WiFi networks.
Choose your network "tss_kt»And use the remote control to enter the password (key) for WiFi access received from the provider.
The network check starts and the following message appears on the screen:
That’s it. Our TV is connected to the Internet.
If during the automatic search your WiFi network was not identified, then it’s okay. Using the remote control, select "Add Network" and enter the name and password (key) of the WiFi network received from the provider.
All of the above in this section can be represented schematically:
How to connect a TV to the Internet using a cable
This method of connecting the Internet to a TV is even easier. It can be divided into 2 ways:
- direct inclusion
- through a router (router)
1. How to connect the TV to the Internet directly (direct connection)
This method is not entirely rational, but you still need to say about it. Suppose that a cable of a dedicated Internet line comes into our apartment.
We connect it directly to the TV in the “LAN” connector (rear panel).
In this case, the Internet will only work on the TV. We do not need this method, because We use the Internet not only on the TV, but also on the yf computer, so let’s move on to the second method of cable connection.
2. How to connect the TV to the Internet through a router (router)
Everything is done in the same way as when setting up a WiFi network through a router. Only in our example, the RJ45 patch cord cable was connected to the “LAN-1 ″ connector on the computer. Now we connect the RJ45 patch cord cable to the “LAN-2 ″ connector and lay it to the TV, which we connect to the“ LAN ”connector on its rear panel.
By the way, in this case, the router may be without WiFi support.
Schematically, it looks like this:
After the connections are made, go to “MENU”.
Next, go to the "Network Settings" item. Here is a window like this.
Press "ENTER" and the window opens:
Click "Start." If you did everything correctly, then the inscription appears on the screen: "The connection to the wired network and the Internet is configured and ready for further use."
If your network wasn’t identified during automatic search, then there’s nothing to worry about. Go to “MENU”, select “Network Status” and go to the “IP Settings” tab.
In this window, we need to enter the “IP Settings” and “DNS Settings” parameters manually (take the data from the technical service of your provider):
Click OK. If you did everything correctly, then the inscription appears on the screen: "The connection to the wired network and the Internet is configured and ready for further use."
With this, I will probably end the article on how to connect a TV to the Internet. Choose a more convenient way to connect. Personally, I connected the Internet to my Samsung TV using WiFi. I did not have to lay additional wires and cables to the TV, which greatly facilitated the connection process. The speed of the Internet connection is quite fine with me, HD quality movies load without problems.
It remains only to protect your purchase from surge in the network and sleep peacefully.
P.S. How did you connect your TV to the Internet?

“I recommend purchasing routers from Asus or D-Link manufacturers.”
and I would not recommend these routers
1. ASUS. the latest firmware is rather slow and very often there are errors and freezes, the old firmware worked better and the hardware was more interesting than the WL-500gP. this is already a legend
2. D-Link, the model-model is different, for example, the D-Link DIR-300 / NRU C1 came out with a huge number of errors in the firmware, its operability turned out to be 0; updating the firmware in the normal mode did not allow it, and it worked noticeably worse unlike previous revisions. Although the revisions of B3. B6 were very successful, in 90% the buyer received a very nimble and reliable thing.
3. The power supply units of these routers are pulsed and the insides are very sensitive to voltage fluctuations, which introduces them into a stupor and they simply hang, so I advise them to be connected to stabilizers or UPSs.
4. Tech. support for these routers may be better
I suggest taking Zyxel Keenetic series routers. This series turned out to be very successful, productive iron, beautiful, convenient admin panel, it is configured very quickly.
This is my subjective opinion, based on the experience of setting up various devices.
I do not recommend: DIR-615, DIR-620, DIR-300 / NRU c1, ASUS 2011-2013 release.
I recommend: DIR-320 A1 (Oleg’s firmware is installed on it and works very well!), Zyxel Keenetic lite, ASUS WL-500gP
Thanks for the recommendation. As for DIR-615, DIR-620, DIR-300 / NRU, I also heard a lot, so I took 320. I looked at Zyxel, but it was a little expensive, as was Asus.
What about TP-Link?
Excellent step-by-step instruction, copied to yourself.
