The Honor 20 smartphone was announced at the end of May, when hard times came for this brand. The United States at that moment struck at Huawei, to which Honor is directly related. Among other things, they have lost support from Google. As a result, during the announcement, numerous questions arose, the most important of which was whether to buy it under such circumstances. Now Honor 20 went on sale, which means that this issue has become even more relevant.
Pros of Honor 20
Cons Honor 20
Price category with many competitors
The Honor 20 went on sale on July 8 at a price of £ 400 in the UK. The same price last year was Honor 10. When you buy a smartphone, you can not help but look at the available alternatives. For example, there is an interesting Asus Zenfone 6 for 499, and the Pixel 3a costs 399 pounds. In general, there is plenty to choose from. The Google smartphone, which offers the best camera possible, is especially good.
In addition to the smartphone itself, you will also find an adapter for recharging with a power of 18 W, a cable for recharging and transferring data, an adapter between USB-C and a 3.5 mm jack. There is no plastic case and the headphones themselves.
In appearance, the smartphone is very similar to the Honor 20 Pro model. Like all modern smartphones, it is made from a combination of metal and glass. Case size is 154 x 74 x 7.9 mm, it weighs 174 g. This allows you to work with the device with one hand without problems, although it is quite slippery.
I did not like the protrusion of the rear cameras, which always leads to the vibration of the smartphone when it lies on flat surfaces with the screen up. Another disadvantage is the lack of protection against water and dust, which by now should already be in all smartphones from medium to high prices. There is no headphone jack either; instead, an adapter has been put in the box.
All buttons on the case are within reach of the fingers and respond quickly to pressing. The fingerprint scanner is built into the power button, it works quickly and reliably. Unless when the device is on the table, it is more difficult to interact with it.
As it has become familiar, you can put two SIM-cards, the compartment for them is located on the left edge of the case. There is no support for memory cards. In terms of build quality, Honor did a good job. The device is beautiful, attracts attention with light effects, especially on the blue model.
Honor 20 screen
The Honor 20 has a 6.26-inch IPS panel with a resolution of 2360 x 1080 pixels. The difference between this screen and OLED panels is noticeable, but the contrast is still good, as is the color reproduction. Even the black color is not bad. The maximum brightness is quite low. In the open air under the sun, in order to see something, you have to twist the brightness to the maximum.
In the settings you can change various parameters, choose color profiles. You can turn on the screen by simply picking up the device, or by using facial recognition. Double tapping activation is not supported.
Video: Honor 20 Pros and Cons
There is no cutout on the screen, since the front camera is located inside a circular hole with a diameter of 4.5 mm. It is located in the upper left corner of the screen.
Honor 20 runs on the Android Pie operating system and the Magic UI 2.1 interface. In this instance, the security update for April 2019 was installed. The interface is not much different from Huawei EMUI, except for minor details. The system can be called intuitive and with flexible settings.
Launching applications and multitasking is fast. Fingerprint gestures are not supported.
Over the past months, clarity has not come about what will happen with the software support for Huawei and Honor smartphones in the future.
Honor 20 performance and specifications
The device runs on a Kirin 980 processor with four Cortex-A76 cores and four more Cortex-A55. The amount of RAM LPDDR4X is 6 GB, storage 128 GB. In the daily work of the Huawei 20 should not disappoint. Everything is displayed quickly and smoothly without unpleasant surprises and bugs. Games, videos, text messaging and reading emails, playing music work quickly and without overheating.
Supported standards are Bluetooth 5.0, NFC, an infrared port and an LED indicator, which is located on the top edge and is not noticeable as well as on other devices. The sound during the telephone conversations was clear on both sides of the line, including when talking on the speakerphone. The only speaker is located on the bottom edge. He normally does his job, but in games in landscape orientation it is easy to close it with your hand.
Honor 20 cameras
Honor once again relies on the photographic capabilities of its smartphone and offers as many as five cameras. There are four at the back: the main one uses a Sony IMX 586 48MP sensor, like the Honor 20 Pro, only without optical stabilization. There are also 16 MP f / 2.2 cameras with a wide-angle lens, a 2 MP depth sensor and a 2 MP f / 2.4 macro camera. In front is a 32MP f / 2.0 camera. Supports shooting video 4K 30fps.
The rear camera doesn’t look particularly useful because it needs very high accuracy to focus from a distance of 4 cm. Another 2 megapixel camera also leaves much to be desired, so no one would have lost anything if there were two cameras instead of four. There are artificial intelligence algorithms, but they cannot be used to take 48 megapixel photos in Ultra Clarity mode. In Wide Angle mode, you can not shoot with a resolution of 48 megapixels. In most cases, you will be content with a resolution of 12 megapixels, where there is a zoom, artificial intelligence and wide-angle shooting. One click to go to the shooting of 48 megapixels.
The quality of the photos is good, the detail and color reproduction did not disappoint. If you enable AI, the colors become more juicy and unnatural, as is always the case in such cases. Best of all, the camera shoots in sufficient light. In night mode, you can highlight the scene in the dark and the results come out pretty good even without AI support. True, the details become blurry. Various shooting modes and filters sometimes give good results, sometimes not very.
One of the strengths of the Honor 20 is its runtime. The battery capacity is 3750 mAh, which is enough for more than one day of operation, even under heavy load. Fast recharging of 25 watts SuperCharge for Honor smartphones has become the norm. There is no wireless charging, which is expected for this price category.
In the tests of PC Mark, the duration of work was 10 hours 31 minutes.
Can the Honor 20 be considered a good smartphone? Of course yes. It has a high build level and an extensive range of features, smooth performance and good autonomy. Even the photographic possibilities did not disappoint, although the two rear cameras are more for advertising than for real use.
The main role in choosing can play the price. Competing smartphones cost the same, and the Google Pixel 3a is even less. Against this background, the Honor 20 is not so easy to recommend for purchase. Especially considering the problems of Huawei and Honor in the USA.
