The muzzle is one of the most important elements of canine ammunition, no less important than the collar and leash.
Contrary to popular opinion about the need for a muzzle only for a large or aggressive dog, he should be in the arsenal of every dog owner, even if his pet is a gentle and friendly dog.
It may be necessary to travel in public transport, visiting a veterinarian for unpleasant dog procedures (for example, cleaning the ears or paranal glands), weaning the dog to pick up "goodies" on the street and the like.
A muzzle is extremely necessary when training a dog, especially training ZKS (protective guard duty).
How to choose a muzzle so that he completely copes with his task?
Consider its main types.
Made of thick leather (imitation leather). Very reliable, in such a muzzle the dog has no chance to bite someone.
Deaf muzzle for a dog
Deaf muzzles are used mainly in training, for example, when practicing the owner’s protection skills, protecting things when the person involved is working without a special suit (so as not to cause the dog to become addicted to a certain “intruder” appearance).
Such muzzles are not suitable for prolonged wear, use in the heat and with intense physical exertion. Although the muzzle allows the dog to open the mouth, but this is not enough for proper breathing and cooling, which can provoke a heat stroke. After using the muzzle it must be removed immediately.
When buying a deaf muzzle should pay attention to dimensional accuracy. Since this type of muzzle is not as flexible as, for example, the muzzle-net, it must be precisely fitted to the dog’s face. It is unacceptable to use both too tight (the dog will not be able to breathe, and when struck, the muzzle will strike the dog’s nose) and too loose (the edge of the muzzle will beat the dog in the bridge of nose and eyes). This will significantly reduce the effectiveness of training.

Muzzle – metal mesh
The reliability of protection against bites by the dog is not inferior to the deaf muzzle. It has both its advantages and disadvantages.
Muzzle for dogs – metal mesh
It is good when used in summer, as it allows the dog to breathe normally and even drink water. But in winter in frosty weather it is undesirable to use such a muzzle.
It requires the same careful selection in size so as not to cause the dog inconvenience and pain.
Great for large "bearded" dogs – Giant Schnauzers, Airedale Terriers, Black Terriers.
For training unsuitable – can seriously injure the person involved.
It is advisable to choose a model with a leather gasket, absorbing mesh.
Muzzle – leather mesh
It is made of both leather and leatherette. It is a leather strip (sometimes solid pieces of leather), fastened with rivets.
Muzzle for a dog – leather mesh
Attention when choosing it is necessary to pay not only size (the dog should be able to open the mouth freely), but also the quality of the material. Leatherette leather of poor quality and tough, non-plastic skin will stand with a stake, rubbing the nose or sides of the muzzle of the dog.
For the same reason, you need to carefully examine the quality of the rivets on the inside of the muzzle – they should not bulge strongly, have sharp edges, traces of rust.
Such muzzles are universal, suitable for many dogs, suitable for visiting the veterinarian, walking in crowded places, transport in public transport. But it is worth considering that the design of the muzzle with long-term close contact with an irritant will allow the dog to bite, so the muzzles of the leather mesh are not suitable for practicing the techniques of PCL.
Easy, practical, convenient. Often equipped with a velcro, which allows you to wear it on dogs with different thickness of the muzzle.
Nylon Muzzle for Dog
Not suitable for large angry dogs. Great for small calm dogs when transporting or visiting a vet.
Such a muzzle is worn only for a short time! It is difficult for a dog to breathe in it, so it is not suitable for long walks.
Muzzle – Nylon Mesh
Unreliable, but easy and fast.

It can be used only in cases when it is necessary to urgently “close” the dog’s mouth, and the dog is constantly in direct contact with the owner.
Suitable for situations where you need to quickly transfer a dog from point A to point B, passing, for example, through a very crowded place.
Muzzle – Duck
Another trend dog fashion.

Lovers of decorative dogs such muzzles, of course, like it. Especially funny to look at dachshunds. If you have a small dog, and the muzzle is needed only in the most extreme cases, try a duck.
Any, the most reliable muzzle, will not be able to cope with its task, if it is not reliably fixed on the dog.
Often, the muzzles are equipped with only two stubs, which are fixed behind the ears at the back of the head. Perhaps there are dogs that enjoy wearing a muzzle, but the vast majority try to get rid of it as soon as possible. And often very successfully.
It is better if the muzzle will have another harness – between the ears, and the whole structure will be fastened to the collar. Otherwise, you risk being in an unpleasant or even dangerous situation for others.
How to make a muzzle quickly yourself?
Sometimes it happens that the muzzle was not at hand, and his hands urgently need to be protected from the teeth of the dog.
Let’s see how veterinarians cope with this when they get “urgent” animals. For temporary fixation of the dog’s jaws, you can make a loop from the bandage, belt, leash, any other similar object.
A strip of fabric folds a loop, pulls over the dog’s face and tightens.
Behind the strip can be tied. Preferably the presence of an assistant (master), who will hold an improvised muzzle so that the dog could not lose it.
Now the doctor can begin to provide urgent assistance to the dog, without risking to be bitten.
